So, have you ever found yourself not daring to dream big?
Or scared that you might fail as you implement that massive change?
Or felt maybe you were a bit of an impostor in a role?
Thank the Gremlins
Well these doubts are the Gremlins, and they are your friends – for they are trying to protect you in some way. They may not seem logical, but they may be deep-seated patterns embedded from earlier experiences in your life. The key here is to become aware of the Gremlins, know they are just thoughts, thank them for their concern, keep them – or let them go – and watch how their power over you dissipates.
They may not seem logical, but they may be deep-seated patterns embedded from earlier experiences in your life.
My New Gremlin
After growing organizations successfully for over 16 years as a CFO, and creating innovative programming for another 10 years as an educator, I had felt quite confident as a leader. That was, until I stepped into the world of the entrepreneurship as an Executive and Leadership Coach.
This shift to being an entrepreneur brought the Gremlins out.
This shift to being an entrepreneur brought the Gremlins out. My life had become a whirlwind of networking events. But there was a problem. On the way to each of these events my chest tightened, my brain started to think about every reason why I should turn the car around. And here is what is funny: as soon as I walked through the door to my event, all was good. I loved meeting new people and sharing my passion to help Emerging Leaders.
So, I connected with my coach, did the work, and figured out that the Gremlin that had reared its head was an issue of safety. Once aware of this Gremlin, and armed with new strategies, I was able to show up ready to find my clients.
Here’s the Deal
So how does my story connect to you as a leader? Have you ever stalled out? Scared to take the first step? Found yourself acting in a way that did not bring the best out of your team? Maybe created triggers in others?
Each one of us has Gremlins or obstacles that can stall us out or get in our way as leaders.
So, What’s the Bottom Line?
It is powerful to grow our self-awareness, for we then can take control of the buried patterns and create the shifts of how we want to interact as Leaders.
